What a fantastic start to the 2018-19 academic year this term has been at Sa Porrassa and this was never more obvious with the news of our excellent examination results, 87% A* to C at IGCSE and 83% A* to C at A Level. Our thanks and congratulations to our students, our teachers and parents for your continued support.

Our students have had some wonderful opportunities to represent the school at various events in our local community. We are proud of all of our students – our school Choir and the BIC band who performed at the Santa Ponsa Christmas Fair last month, our Debate Team who won despite strong competition in the Rotary International Calvia debate against Queen’s College, as well as our Earth ambassadors from Year 6 who took part in the ‘Dos Manos’ programme at Can Pere Antoni bay in Palma.

There has been so much learning going on both in and outside the classroom. From Shakespeare in Literature lessons, marine conservation and the human body, pop art and Henri Matisse, the Pythagorean theorem or finding self-awareness through meditation, the list is endless – as is our students’ thirst for knowledge.

As they prepare to make their choices for further education, our Sixth Form students had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona to participate in a University fair to inspire them and give them a wider understanding of their future options. We have extended our Sixth Form provision and saw great interest in in our post-16 provision during our Open Day. We were also excited as to share news of ‘The Orbital Sixth Form Scholarship’. This is an exciting new opportunity for students with exceptional academic abilities and potential.

We are a supportive, caring and close-knit community here at BIC. Our community engagement efforts are a true testament to this. The school supported the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in November, we’ve collected over 50 boxes as part of Operation Christmas Child and we are over halfway to reaching our 2000EUR goal to help victims of the Sant Lorenç floods.

We’ve held celebrations – from Halloween to World Teacher’s Day – and many events this term too. Our Annual Meet & Greet back in October was a great way to get to know our parents, old and new, and our Parent Lunches have ensured that contact is maintained throughout the school year. We look forward to these continuing next term with the next lunch scheduled for January 18th at Saffron Indian Restaurant in Palmanova.

At BIC Sa Porrassa we are keen to develop our Sports provision across the school. We have appointed House Captains, introduced Inter-House competitions in a number of team sports including basketball, volleyball and hockey, took part in a nail-biting basketball tournament against our sister campus, Sant Agustí and went to watch fixtures of local professional teams such as Urbia Volley Palma. It was wonderful to see the school compete, and in some cases, beat the other international schools on the island. We also organised our first ever Bike Fest this year too, a most wonderful sports event with over 200 people attending to celebrate all things cycling – time trials, races, workshops and sponsor stalls.

We are equally excited about all that is yet to come next term. We hope you enjoy our festive Christmas Fair this afternoon and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

I would like to end by wishing you all a very Happy Christmas.
