Years 7, 8 and 9

When a student enters the secondary department of school, he/she is in Year 7 and will be learning all subjects in English, based on the National Curriculum of England Key Stage 3, until the end of Year 8.

The students have the opportunity to study English, Spanish, German, French, Catalan, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Physical Education, Global Citizenship,  Art and Music.

Key Stage 3 focuses on providing the foundation of knowledge for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) work starting in Year 10.

Etapa Clave 4: para estudiantes entre los 14 a 16 años de edad – Years 10 y 11

Years 10 and 11

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE):

IGCSEs are international qualifications developed by Pearson Edexcel and the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). At Baleares International College, the IGCSE is typically taken by 16 year-old students, at the end of Year 11. These are external examinations. This means that the examination papers are sent to the school by Edexcel and Cambridge and are then returned to them for marking and grading by an official body. The results are announced in August. IGCSE is a highly respected and internationally recognised qualification.

The students will all study English Language and Literature, Spanish, Mathematics, Double Science and Global Citizenship in addition to core PE (Physical Education). They also have optional subject choices which include Art and Design, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Computer Science, Drama, Music, Business Studies, Physical Education GCSE, German, and French. Spanish Nationals are also required to follow Catalan.

We're extremely proud of our students' academic achievements and you can view our most recent IGCSE Results to see how we exceed global averages.

The freedom to develop real depth – Students aged 14 to 16 years

As students become clearer about their ambitions, A Levels allow them to concentrate on selected subjects and develop a deeper understanding.

For a young person with emerging strengths, this is a significant advantage: the opportunity to devote more time and attention to subjects that motivate them and support their intended university pathway. Cambridge International A Levels also develop independent learning and critical thinking skills valued by universities.

Qualifications with international reach – Students aged 14 to 16 years

A British education can support ambitions far beyond the UK.

Cambridge International A Levels are recognised by universities worldwide, giving students a well-established route towards international higher education. Subject choices and entry requirements vary, making thoughtful planning an important part of the journey.

Your questions about the British curriculum

What is the British curriculum?

At Britannica, our programme is based on the English National Curriculum, adapted for our international community. Students progress through Primary and Secondary education towards IGCSEs and A Levels.

What is the difference between IGCSEs and A Levels?

IGCSEs are normally taken at the end of Year 11 and cover a range of subjects. A Levels follow in Sixth Form, allowing students to study a smaller selection in greater depth as they prepare for university or other next steps.

Does my child need to be a native English speaker?

No. Baleares provides specialist English as an Additional Language support. The level of English needed depends on the stage of entry, with strong English particularly important for A Level study. Speak to our admissions team about your child’s current language skills and requirements.

Can A Levels lead to universities outside the UK?

Yes. A Levels are widely recognised internationally. Each university and course sets its own requirements, including the subjects and grades needed. BIC students have progressed to universities in the UK, elsewhere in Europe and further afield.
